Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for promoting South-South and triangular cooperation to ensure shared prosperity, sustainable development and a life of dignity for all, reports UNB. "Let's commit ourselves to promote South-South and triangular cooperation to ensure shared prosperity, sustainable development and a life of dignity for all," she said. The Prime Minister was delivering her statement at the High-Level Roundtable on South-South Cooperation held at the conference room of the UN Headquarters in New York on Saturday. Chinese President Xi Jinping and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon co-chaired the roundtable attended by heads of state and government of 18 countries, including Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Pakistan and South Africa. The leaders of these countries took part in the roundtable.
Emphasising that South-South cooperation can also foster durable peace and security, she said, "Indeed, the volatile global security situation, particularly violent extremism, continue to pose significant challenge to sustainable development in the South,"
Sheikh Hasina, however, said the range and quantum of South-South cooperation have expanded in the last decade or so. "But, it is also a reality that South-South Cooperation cannot substitute North-South Cooperation."
She said the concept of South-South cooperation is premised on solidarity and compassion. "Our countries may differ in size, strength or level of development, but we generally share similar development visions. We can thus exchange, disseminate and scale up successful development solutions with one another,"
The Prime Minister said the establishment of the BRICS Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a positive development in this respect. "With progress in science, technology and innovation in the South, new dynamics of South-South cooperation have evolved."
In the evening, Sheikh Hasina received 'ICT Sustainable Development Award' from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in recognition of her contributions towards harnessing Information Communication and Technologies for Sustainable Development.
ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao formally handed over the award to the Prime Minister at a Gala Dinner programme at the UN Headquarters in New York.
ITU honoured a number of heads of state and government, past and present leaders of the United Nations, UN permanent representatives and business executives in recognition of their contributions towards promoting the use of ICTs for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Receiving the award, the Prime Minister said, “It’s a significant recognition as we‘re working to build a ‘Digital Bangladesh’. She extended her thanks to ITU for this important recognition, saying she deeply feels honoured to receive this award.” Dedicating the award to the young people of Bangladesh, Hasina said her government is promoting ICT access to every citizen so that no one is left behind. She called upon all for joining hands with each other to remove all barriers to a knowledge-based sustainable future.
Earlier on Saturday, Sheikh Hasina reiterated her call to world leaders for revisiting the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to ensure the access for people to key technologies for global sustainable growth while addressing an interactive dialogue on sustainable economic growth at the UN Headquarters.
“The Existing IPR regime needs to be revisited so that people can access key technologies related to agriculture and food security, health and waste management,” she said. In her opening remarks, Sheikh Hasina said she is encouraged with the adoption of a ‘pro-people and pro-planet’ agenda by the UN General Assembly and promises made for inclusive development for all.
“Now, we must materialise the expectations of our people. Many of our countries need the resources to implement our collective commitments. At the same time we must address the issues related to enabling environment at global level,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina along with her Belgian counterpart Charles Michel co-chaired the interactive dialogue on ‘Fostering Sustainable Economic Growth and Transformation and Promoting Sustainable Consumption and Production’ held on the sidelines of the UNGA-70th session. The Prime Minister urged the world leaders to walk together to secure common destiny. “We need to ensure that people at the bottom also enjoy fruits of development. Across the developing world, technology can make differences in sound consumption and production in people’s life,” she said. Sheikh Hasina laid emphasis on responsible actions of the private sector and civil society and help to bridge gaps across communities and countries.
Voicing her government's firm commitment to continue to work for the social, economic and political emancipation of women, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged all vow afresh to achieve gender parity in all aspects and make the world a better place for girls and women.
"I see a strong political resolve today to move forward with gender equality and women's empowerment. Let's, once again, take a vow to achieve gender parity in all aspects and make the world a better place for our women and girls," she said.
The Prime Minister was delivering her statement on Global Leaders Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: A commitment to Action at the UN Headquarters on Sunday. Bangladesh’s Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Prime Minister of Denmark, President of African Development Bank, Executive Director of Economic Commission of Africa, Foreign Minister of Kirgizstan, Foreign Minister of Austria, Environment Minister of Slovakia, Director General of ILO, UK Secretary of State for International Development and Novel laureate Kailash Sathirthya, among others, spoke on the occasion.
