Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon yesterday laid emphasis on establishing rights of hijra or third gender community as they are part of the society, reports BSS.
“Like other segments of population, hijras should enjoy all sorts of facilities in line with the constitution,” he told a discussion titled “Obstacle for legal recognition of hijra community and ways for overcome” organised by National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh (NHRC) at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka, an official release said.
Health Secretary Md Sirajul Haque, Ambassador of Norway to Bangladesh Sidcel Bleknmn and representatives from different local and international organizations, among others, addressed the discussion with NHRC Chairman Kazi Reazul Haque in the chair. Menon said hijra or third gender community is deprived of different opportunities both at family and social life.
