Ex-SP’s son ‘commits suicide’

A son of a retired superintendent of police reportedly committed suicide at his residence in capital’s Kakrail area yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Rakibul Hasan Ripon, 35, son of MA Rafiq. Victim’s brother Mohammad Liton said that his brother hanged himself with the ceiling fan in his room.Being rescued, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead, said Sub-inspector Bacchu Mia, in-charge of the hospital police camp.

Juba Dal leader held in Sylhet   

Police arrested a local leader of Juba Dal from Madrasa Bazar area in Balaganj upazila of Sylhet on Saturday evening. The arrestee was identified as Babul Miah, president of Ward no. 2 of Bazar unit Juba Dal. Sub-inspector Kamrul Hossain of Balaganj Police Station said a team of police arrested Babul from the area in the evening in a case filed for blasting crude bombs in Morarbazar in Dewan Bazar union, Sirajpur village and Azizpur Bazar in Paschim Gouripur union.

Speaker leaves for Geneva

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday left Dhaka for Geneva, Switzerland to attend the 139th assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU). The assembly with the theme ‘Placing science at the heart of parliaments, policy-making and peace’ is scheduled to begin on October 14 and it will end on October 18, an official release said yesterday. Speaker is leading a 17-member Bangladesh delegation in the 5-day session, it also added. More than 1,300 MPs from different countries are taking part the assembly this year.

Workshop on sustainable development goal held

A workshop on ‘Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Link Policies and Programmes was held yesterday at conference room of Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Service(RDRS) Bangladesh. In the conference many participants were present. Dr Mahabubul Alam, district livestock officer, Motlubur Rahaman,  additional deputy director of DAE,  Md Mozammel  Hoque, asst director family planning depertment,  Mrs. Shammi Hoque, asst.director, Rangpur Betar(Radio), Towhidul Islam, district primary education officer,  Roksana Begum, district education officer, local government representative were also present. The event was addressed, among others, by senior research fellow of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Toufiqul Islam Khan. Rangpur-Dinajpur Rural Service (RDRS) organised and project briefing was done by Senior Programme Officer of Oxfam,Bangladesh, Mahfuza Akhter.
