An alleged ‘drug trader’ was killed in a ‘gunfight’ in Mymensingh town early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Sharif Ahmed, 32, son of late Nazim Uddin of Mymensingh town’s Krishtapur area. On information that a gang of drug traders were engaged in drug trading at town’s Kalibari area, a team of detective branch (DB) of police led by its officer-in-charge Shah Kamal Akanda raided the area around 1.00am.
Sensing police presence, the drug peddlers, around five in number, fired several rounds of gunshots aiming at the police team that forced the law enforcers to retaliate, leading to the ‘gun battle’. Sharif sustained bullet wounds during the gun battle, said the OC. Sharif was immediately rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) where the doctors
declared him dead, the OC added. The body was sent to MMCH morgue for autopsy. Police recovered 100 pieces of yaba pills and five-kg hemp wrapped in a polythene bag from the spot.
Sharif was wanted in seven cases related to narcotics filed with Kotwali Police Station, the OC informed. Two DB constables- Shamim Hossain, 30 and Selim Miah, 32, were injured during the incident. They were given first aid at Mymensingh Police Lines Hospital. A case was lodged with Kotwali Police Station.
