Mobile phone users are unhappy with the services provided by the operators and a huge number of complaints have already been lodged with the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Subscribers of cell phone operators have lodged 1,496 complaints with the BTRC after they failed to get any remedy for their grievances from their respective operators during the July-September period this year.
Among these, 1,366 complaints have been resolved by the regulator.
The telecom regulator has recently disclosed the statistics displaying the complaints that included customer dissatisfaction regarding network coverage, data package and volume offered by the mobile operators like Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink and Teletalk.
BTRC acting chairman Md. Jahurul Haque has told The Independent that the commission has been trying to resolve the issues within the shortest possible time after receiving the complaints.
Forty-seven complaints regarding the text message service and nuisance calls have been lodged with the Complaint Centre-100 of the BTRC. In August, the number of complaints reduced to 8, but it rose to 19 again in September.
On the other hand, 112 complaints have been lodged regarding harassment on social media. The number was 59 in July, 29 in August and 33 in September.
The BTRC officles has said customers are now are going to the operators first to resolve the problem and then approach the BTRC for redressal. It, however, could not provide any information about how many complaints were lodged against an operator.
Md Jahurul Haque has said the subscribers have lodged a huge number of complaints regarding quality of service.
Customers are also dissatisfied with Internet speed. As many as 46 complaints regarding poor internet speed have been lodged during that time.
However, the speed of the complaints began to decline slightly in July after the number dwindled to 17. It reduced to 16 in August. The number of complaints regarding data speed reduced further to 13 in September.
The BTRC has observed that fraudulent activities using mobile phones have increased. In the three months (July to September), the BTRC has received 17 complaints of cheating using mobile phones. In September, the number was 11. It was two in August and four in July.
When asked about the fraud, BTRC sources said it was basically the operators’ offer and fraud in the name of the lottery.
Customers have also griped about tariffs. The BTRC has received 144 complaints over the last three months on the issue. The number of such complaints was 15 in
July, 90 in August and 39 in September. The problem arose following extra charges and not keeping the package rate properly.
However, the number of problems have started going down after the launch of a uniform call rate, the BTRC said.
