Use of Climate change fund

Spekers propose law amendment

Members of Parliament and representatives of government and non-government organisations have recommended forming of a high-power representative commission, led by the Prime Minister, to ensure proper use of climate change funds. Speaking at a roundtable on ‘Desired role of the Parliament Members for Enhancing Governance in Climate Finance in Bangladesh’ Thursday, they emphasised the need to bring about structural changes in the Climate Change Trust Fund by amending the law to ensure transparency and accountability.

“There should be an effective watchdog to monitor that the money allocated by the government from the Climate Change Trust Fund is being spent properly. A powerful commission can be formed under the supervision of the Prime Minister. Only then can the proper use of the Climate Change Trust Fund be ensured,” said Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah.

He praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her strong role in creating world opinion to determine the course of action in dealing with the impact of climate change.

The deputy speaker, who addressed the roundtable as chief guest, said that the Prime Minister is the only head of the government who has created a separate fund to deal with the impact of climate change. Earlier, Bangladesh had to depend on foreign assistance, he added. He mentioned that developing countries like Bangladesh are victims of climate change due to emission of carbon by the developed countries.

He alleged that the developed countries are not playing their due role to fulfill their promises to provide financial grants to the affected countries. He called for taking a combined step in this regard.
