BNP not competent enough to be registered with EC: Quader

STAFF REPORTER

The Awami League (AL) general secretary, Obaidul Quader, has said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is not fit to be registered with the Election Commission (EC) as it is a "terrorist organisation". “After the announcement of the August 21 grenade attack case verdict, it has been proved once again that the BNP is a terrorist organisation. So, the political party cannot be registered with the EC,” he added.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said this while talking to reporters in the Nowdoba area of Jajira, Shariatpur, yesterday (Friday) after visiting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rally ground there. Sheikh Hasina is expected to address the rally on Sunday. The AL general secretary alleged that the BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, was the mastermind behind the August 21 grenade attack on the AL rally in the city and he should have been sentenced to death.

He said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia too cannot avoid responsibility for the attack as she was the head of the government at that time. So, she also should be brought to justice.

Referring to the BNP’s participation in the coming general election, Quader said the party knew it well whether to join the polls or not. He wondered if there was any instance in the world where the government has invited the opposition to join the polls. It is the BNP's democratic rights to join the polls, he noted.

“The BNP’s moral base and image as a political party has hit the bottom,” Quader added. Talking about the development in the Padma Bridge’s construction work, the minister said the five spans of the bridge have already been installed on the Jajira point, one was installed on the Mawa side and work is going on to install five more spans there.

Among others, AL organising secretaries BM Mozammel Haque, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, and top officials of the ministry were present on the occasion.

AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim alleged that the country and its people would not be safe in the hands of the BNP as the party had turned into a terrorist organisation.

Nasim, who is also the health minister, was addressing a press conference at the AL’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city.
