BCB chief rules out of staging next BPL final in UAE

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon poured cold water on the speculation that the BCB is planning to organise the ensuing edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the upcoming general election of the country.

Papon said that it had been put forward the proposal to stage the final of the next BPL seeing the roaring presence of the huge number of Bangladeshi expat spectators at stadium while he was in UAE at the stroke of the Asia Cup.

But Papon said that they have no such plan to shift the ensuing BPL for the national election.

“I have no information about such fact. But when I was in UAE during the Asia Cup, such talk was held that the final of the BPL will be staged in Dubai but I don't get any justification of it,” said Nazmul Hassan Papon.

“To see so many Bangladeshi expat spectators at stadium, it might be thought that it will be flared up if the final  could be organised here because they are Bangladeshi and if it is held, they could then be witnessed the games of the compatriots. From that point of views, such talk might have held,” Papon told media at Dhaka Club during the closing ceremony of a week-long snooker tournament yesterday night.

“Such talk has not been held from the board. Even it is not done officially. Today no such talk was held,” he added.

The BCB president said that there is no connection delaying the BPL with the general election, adding that they delayed the BPL for the back-to-back home series against Zimbabwe and the West Indies.

“There is no relation with the election. I told you all repeatedly it is being misinterpreted,” the BCB boss said.

“BPL has been delayed for the back-to-back home series against Zimbabwe and the West Indies, not for the election,” he also said.

“And if the election is held ahead, the BPL will then not be held at that time. Moreover, it will be held. I have no doubt in this regard. Even I don't see any possibility of delaying BPL for election,” he added.

Even though it was not formally announced from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad will lead Bangladesh in the Test and T20 series against Zimbabwe and the West Indies in absence of the injured regular captain Shakib Al Hasan.

It’s not new for Mahmudullah because in last January when Shakib sustained injury in the final of the tri-nation home series, the dexterous all-rounder was given the leadership.

This time the board is walking on that way what BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon hinted such at a programme at the Dhaka Club yesterday night.

“It’s not a matter of choice. Even I should not tell it because selectors will officially declare it. But as you have asked me the question so I tell. It is very simple-Shakib is captain and Mahmudullah is vice captain. If captain is not present, in that case, vice captain will be doing captaincy. It is norms. It should be and that has been happening since the past,” Nazmul said.

“We can bring someone from outside. Then when Shakib comes being fit, we have to drop him (new one) again. It shows bad. We can bring someone from outside but such changes will not be shown good,” he continued.

“For this, I think, as Riyad is vice captain so he should be continuing until Shakib comes back being fit,” he added. When asked about Shakib, Hassan said that this is the right time for him to do a surgery if he wants to do because they want to get a complete fit Shakib before the next World Cup.

He thinks that the games they have ahead of them before the World Cup he needs not to play there.

“I held talks with Shakib on several times but he never tells me about his operation. Even any doctor or physio doesn’t tell about operation. I think, someone, of course, told him unless he would not keep it in his mind and tell he needs to do operation before the Asia Cup,” Papon, who is about to take the charge of Asian Cricket Council (ACC), said.

“Basically he told about a surgery. I had no idea about such condition of his finger. The series and tournament he played he need not to play those. It’s needed to find out the cause of his infection. Now his infection has been done well. We are very much happy for it. Now what will be happened. It’s very difficult to make comment because none of us where he does his operation and who will do his operation. I have heard from media that he wants to do a surgery before the Asia Cup,” he also said.

“If he wants to do surgery, I think, this is the right time. If his hand pains went away, he takes two-month rest and then performs a surgery. He has enough time ahead. He will be come round within three months. Then we will get a complete fit Shakib before the World Cup. I think, the games we have now is better not to go,” he concluded.
