Eight fishermen jailed for catching hilsa defying ban
Chandpur: Eight fishermen were sentenced to one-year imprisonment for catching hilsa in the Meghna River on Thursday defying an ongoing ban on netting hilsa, reports UNB.
The convicts are Ripon Patwary, 22, Rahim Sheikh, 35, Masud Patwary, 30, Chunnu Miah, 25, Fazlu Miah, 36, Hanif Saiyal, 22, Md Sharif, 38, and Al-Amin, 35.
Separate mobile courts caught the fishermen from different places of the river.
District Fisheries Officer Asadul Baki said Executive Magistrate Md Mahbubur Rahman and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Amit Chakrabarty operated the mobile courts.
The detained fishermen were later sent to jail, he added.
Fisherman goes missing as boat sinks in Padma River
Kushtia: A fisherman went missing as a boat sank in the Padma River due to strong current at Boiragichar Bazar in Doulatpur upazila on Thursday, reports UNB.
The missing fisherman is Shahabul Islam, 42, son of Amirul Islam of East Philipnagar area.
AKM Fazlul HaqKabiraj, chairman of Philipnagar union, said Shahabul and his cousin Hamidul went to the river for catching fish around 3:30 am.
At one stage, the boat carrying them sank in the rivert. Hamidul managed to swim ashore while Shahabul remained missing.
29 arrested in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR: Law enforcers, in special drives arrested 29 persons including eight drug traders and two activists of Jamaat-E-Islami from different areas of the district in last 12-hour ending at 8am yesterday morning, reports BSS.
Law enforcers also seized 200 bottles of Phensidyl, one kg of Ganja, 3,500 pieces of cow fattening tablets and 319 pieces of Yaba tablets during the drives.
Police said they were picked up from different areas of the district on different charges.
During the drives, Dinajpur Sadar police arrested four persons including two drug traders along with 319 pieces of Yaba tablets, Birganj Thana police arrested four persons, Phulbari Thana police arrested three drug traders, Biral Thana police arrested one person, Kaharole Thana police arrested two persons, Khansama Thana police arrested two persons, Parbatipur Thana police arrested two persons, Hakimpur Thana police arrested two persons and Chirirbandar Thana police arrested six persons including two activists of Jamaat-E-Islami.
Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.
Meanwhile, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive detained three drug traders along with 3,500 pieces of cow fattening tablets, one kg of Ganja and 200 bottles of Phensidyl around 6am from Hili Railway Station in Hakimpur upazila of the district.
Later, the detained persons were handed over to the Hakimpur Thana police, BGB said.
The arrested persons were sent to jail.
International Day of Girl Child observed in Rangpur

Girls Takeover Campaign, organised by Plan International, was launched on International Girls Day 2018 in Rangpur yesterday.
Dr Md Abu Zakirul Islm, civil surgeon of Rangpur, symbolically handed over the charge of his office to Moushumi Khalko, a member of the Orao community and a student, for a day.
Moushumi held a meeting with the stuff of the Civil Surgeon's Office and discussed various issues. Later, she visited the Arginimat Community Clinic in Gangachara upazila and discussed the issue of the health of the mother and the child with new mothers there.
She also discussed sexual reproductive health rights, adverse impacts of child marriage, and girl empowerment with adolescents in the Gangachara upazila health complex . She requested all adolescent girls to share their problems with health service providers.
Dr Md Abu Zakirul Islam and others also spoke on the occasion.
Biploby Rani Dey Roy, communicaatuions specialist of Plan International, conducted the programme.
