Baset Majumder new Bar Council

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder has been made the Vice-Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council by its executive committee for next three years.
Members of the council, who were elected in an election on August 26, nominated Majumder for the post at a meeting of the council presided over by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam yesterday. As per the council rules, the attorney general is the chairman of the council.
Majumder, a member of Awami League’s advisory council, had been the council’s vice chairman once before. He had also served as the president and general secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association in separate terms.
Barrister M Amir-ul Islam, one of the influential winning candidates of the ruling Awami League-backed lawyers’ panel Sammilita Ainjibi Samannway Parishad (SASP), boycotted the meeting. He was trying to become the vice-chairman of the council, according to meeting sources.
The SASP bagged 11 out 14 posts while the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad (JAOP) secured three posts in the election to the lawyers’ regulatory body.
Of the seven general member positions at the Bar Council, five elected by the SASP are M Amir-ul Islam, Abdul Baset Mazumder, Abdul Matin Khashru, ZI Khan Panna, and SM Rezaul Karim.
The two other general members are Khandker Mahbub Hossain, the outgoing vice-chair of the Bar Council, and MM Mahbub Uddin Khokon. They have been elected general members from the JAOP panel.  Hossain is the current Supreme Court Bar Association president while Khokon is the general secretary.
As many as 43,302 lawyers voted on August 26 to elect 14 members of the council – seven for the general members posts and as many for the region-based posts.
The pro-AL lawyers who won in six regional posts are Kazi Md Nazibullah Hiru (Dhaka), HR Zahid Anwar (Mymensingh and Faridpur region), Md Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury (Chittagong and Noakhali), Parvez Alam Khan (Khulna, Barisal and Patuakhali), Md Yahya (Rajshahi, Jessore and Kushtia), and Md Rezaul Karim (Dinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra and Pabna).
Kaiyum Haque has been elected the sole regional member from the pro-BNP lawyers’ forum from the Sylhet and Comilla regions.
Official results to the Bar Council election were declared on September 3, a week after the polls were held throughout the country on August 26.
