Bangladesh tumble out of Youth Asia Cup

India win semis by two runs
Sports Reporter

Hosts Bangladesh narrowly missed the opportunity to advance to the final of the Under-19 Asia cup as India won by 2 runs in the first semi-final yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium

The margin of the victory told the tale how hapless the young Tigers were against the India who continued winning streak in emphatic fashion.

India will take on the winners between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, who will play the second semi-final tomorrow (Friday) at the same venue.

Electing to bat first, India stumbled in the beginning when pacer Shoriful Islam made an early breakthrough by dismissing opener Devdutt Padikkal (1) in the third over. But other opener Yashasvi Jaiswal along with Anuj Rawat built a 66-run partnership in the third wicket. Bangladesh captain Towhid Ridoy broke the partnership in the 21st over as Rawat went back to the pavilion after scoring 35 runs off 64 balls. Bangladesh then mounted more pressure upon India as they took three more wickets within four overs. India were reduced to 77 for five in the 25th over. Sameer Choudhary then played an instrumental 38 run innings as eventually India could rack up 172 runs in 49.3 overs losing all wickets.

Pacer Shoriful picked three wickets while Mrittunjoy Chowdhury, Rishad Hossain and Towhid Ridoy took two wickets each.

In reply, Bangladesh also made a shaky start with the bat as top order batsmen again failed provide support for middle order batsmen. Openers Prantik Nawroz Nabil and Sajjad Hossian got out scoring only two and six runs respectively. The Indian bowlers had the grip in their hands and at one stage Bangladesh were 65 for 5 in 19.3 overs.

Shamim Hossain once again rose to occasion and took charge of the Bangladesh’s innings, forming a brilliant 74-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Akbar Ali and began to steady the chase for Bangladesh.

India bounced right back in the game when Harsh Tyagi took the wicket of Akbar Ali in 36th over. Akbar was on the verge completing his maiden half century when he was caught by Ayush Badoni. He scored 45 off 63 balls with three fours and one six. India took more control after that as they also scalped the vital wicket of Shamim Hossian in the 43rd over. Shamim played a brilliant knock of 59 off 81 balls with five fours and two sixes. This was Shamim’s second half century in the competition.

Bangladesh lost two quick wickets and at one stage 12 were needed while India needed one more wicket to win. The last wicket pair Rakibul Hasan and Minhazur Rahman scored 9 runs but fell agonizingly short as Minhazur was run-out due to a mix-up and eventually India won the match by 2 runs.
