Woman murdered in Rajshahi

A woman was slaughtered by miscreants at her house at Jitpur in Rajshahi on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Zohara Begum, 50. After separation with her husband Helal Uddin, she used to stay with her son Jahangir Alam at the village.

Quoting locals, police said a group of miscreants stormed the house of Jahangir around 9pm and swooped on his wife Rumi Khatun with sharp weapons. As Zohara came in the rescue of Rumi, the attackers slit her throat, leaving her dead on the spot. Locals took injured Rumi to Tanore Upazila Health Complex. Officer-in-charge of Tanore Police Station Rezaul Islam said they were trying to arrest the culprits.

7 get life terms for murder

A court in Cumilla on Wednesday sentenced seven people to life term imprisonment for killing a man over a playing ludu in 2015. The convicts are Paran Mia, 50, Bablu, 20, son of Paran Mia, Jamal, 42, son of Zahir Uddin, Shakil, 26, son of Shafiq Mia, Shawkat Hossain, 18, son of Shahid Mia, Helal, 24, son of Samsur, Sabuj, 20, son of Abdul Khalek alias Seru Mia of Chouddagram upazila.

According to the prosecution, Ekram Ullah, a resident of Noapara village, had an enmity with the convicts over playing ludu on September 11, 2015.

Later, the convicts stabbed Ekram with a sharp weapon, leaving him dead on the spot. Following the killing, victim’s father Moksed Mia filed a case with Chouddagram Police Station. Police submitted the charge-sheet accusing seven people on February 24, 2016.

US Embassy holiday Oct 7

The US Embassy in Dhaka including its consular section will remain closed on Sunday on the occasion of Columbus Day, an American holiday.

The American Centre with the Archer K. Blood American Centre Library and the Education USA Student Advising Center will also remain closed on the day.

However, emergency services for American citizens will be available, said the Embassy yesterday.

Man killed in road crash

A man was killed while another injured when a pick-up van hit a rickshaw in Dakpara area of Keraniganj on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 52, son of Sohrab Hossain of West Rabishur.

The accident took place around 11:45 pm when a pick-up van hit a rickshaw carrying Shafiqul and his wife Saima, leaving them injured, said Shaker Mohammad Zubaiyer, officer-in-charge of Keraniganj Model Police Station.

4,543 cases filed for traffic rule violation

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the capital streets on Wednesday filed 4,543 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violation.

It also realised over Taka 36.97 lakh as fine for traffic rule violation, said an official release. Of the total cases, 344 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 104 for using hydraulic horn, five for using hooter and beckon light and nine others for using tinted glass.
