EC to recruit 2,000 people in 517 upazilas before next polls
The Election Commission (EC) is going to recruit 2,000 people in 517 upazilas before the next parliamentary election. The manpower will be added before the general election. They will be used in the parliamentary poll. Right now, the commission has about 3,000 employees. Once the new recruitments are made, there will be around 5,000 employees of the EC, election commissioner Mahbub Talukdar told the media at his office in the Election Bhaban yesterday.
He also said the EC had recommended the promotion of 75 of its officers last Wednesday, but there was no promotion at the joint secretary level.
Nine officers from the 10 regional election offices were given promotion, entitling them to the fourth grade of the national pay scale, he added. A total of 29 officers have been promoted to the deputy secretary rank, raising them to the fifth grade. The EC has also recommended the promotion of 37 senior assistant secretaries, taking them to the sixth grade.
When asked whether such recruitments and promotions before the nationalSTAFF REPORTER election would raise questions, Talukdar said: No. The recruitment will be completed under proper scrutiny. There will be no controversy. He also said a committee led by him had recommended the promotions, which would become effective after the full commissions nod.
Earlier, before the ninth parliamentary election, there was a controversy concerning recruitment before the election. The then chief election commissioner, ATM Shamsul Huda, had cancelled the move.
