Homebound passengers, using highways, railways and waterways on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Azha celebrations, one of the biggest festivals of the Muslims, are facing immense difficulties.
The three-day Eid holidays begin from tomorrow.  Passengers using the highways and railways are already experiencing huge traffic congestion and delays in train schedules. Again, journeys on riverine routes have also been hampered, as many shoals have developed on waterways.
The Jatri Kalyan Samity (‘Passengers’ Welfare Association’) claimed that passengers have to pay extra charges, totalling some Tk. 11,000 crore, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, while travelling on highways, railways, airways and waterways.  The association yesterday released a report, which showed that passengers have to shell out extra money—to the tune of a total of around Tk. 11,000 crore—during their journeys this Eid. The report also claimed that passengers who travel on highways, railways, waterways and airways have to shell out extra during Eid holidays every year.
The Road Transport and Highways Division has opened a control room at the head office of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to ensure that the journeys of passengers on the occasion of Eid are smooth.
Joint secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division, Abdul Malek, has been given the responsibility of the control room to monitor the situation on highways. His mobile number is 01730782946; the other numbers are 9130662 and 01966622019.
Shipping minister Shajahan Khan visited the Sadarghat launch terminal and directed the officials to ensure that travelling on the waterways is smooth.
Urging the passengers not to travel on the roofs of launches, the minister said, “Life is very valuable—please don’t travel on any overloaded launch.” Stern action will be taken if launch owners try to ply overloaded launches or charge extra fares from passengers, he warned. “The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), river police, Coast Guard and other authorities will strongly monitor the launches,” the minister added.

At least 12 dredgers have been deployed at Laharhat-Veduria, Mawa-Charjanajat, Shimulia-Kewrakandi and Paturia-Daulatdia river routes to respond swiftly to any unwarranted situation, he announced.
The Shimulia-Kewrakandi ferry route resumed services yesterday, after 10 days.
