Man jailed for raping baby
A trial court in Rajshahi sentenced a man to 50 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl at Boikury village in Bagmara Upazila of the district over four years back.
Additional District and Session Judge FM Mejbaul Haque handed over the verdict on Tuesday afternoon, convicting Mofiz Uddin, 50 after being examined all relevant documents and deposition of eye witness.
The court also fined him Taka 50,000, in default; he will have to suffer one year more imprisonment.
According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that the accused Mofij Uddin took the baby to a secluded place and violated her on September 17, 2014.
Later the father of the victim had lodged a case with Bagmara Police Station on the same day.
Garment factory gutted
A fire gutted a readymade garment factory at Borobari in Gazipur city this morning.
Md Akhteruzzaman, assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at Unique Washing Plant around 9 am and spread soon. On information, two firefighting units rushed in and extinguished the blaze around 9:30 am, he said. However, the loss occurred due to it could not be calculated immediately, he added.
Youth crushed under train
A young man was crushed under the wheels of a train at Belpukur Railgate in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Emdadul Haq, 22, son of Rezaul Karim of Khudrajamia village in the upazila.
Sudhir Babu, officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station, said the train hit the young man when he was walking along the rail tracks around 1 pm, leaving him dead on the spot. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
2 electrocuted in capital
In separate incidents, two people died from electrocution in the capital’s Demra and Mugda areas on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Rashed, 23, a construction worker, and Milon, 30, a refilling station employee.
Shimal, a co-worker of Rashed, said the youth was engaged in piling work at Staff Quarter Road in Demra in the morning when he came in contact with an electrified rod around 12:30 pm. Seriously injured Rashed was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he was pronounced dead around 1:30 pm.
In another incident, Milon was electrocuted when he was washing a car at NS CNG Station and Servicing Centre of Mugda in the afternoon. Mehedi Hasan, an employee of the refilling station, said Milon was electrocuted after water from a pipe got contacted with a live electric pole.
4,436 cases filed for traffic rule violation
Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the city streets on Tuesday filed 4,436 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violation. It also realised over Taka 37.68 lakh as fine for traffic rule violation, said an official release.
Of the total cases, 338 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 94 for using hydraulic horn, 10 for using hooter and beckon light and 13 others for using tinted glass. Police filed 1,388 cases against motorcycles and seized 96 others for violation of the traffic rules. Traffic police has dumped 37 vehicles and wrecked 818 others.
Foolproof security for Durga Puja
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken tight security measures in and around of all the 230 puja mandaps in the capital for peaceful celebration of Durga Puja.
The largest religious festival of the Hindu community will be held from October 15 to 19.
“All possible security measures, including intelligence vigilance, have been taken in and around all the 230 puja mandaps in the capital for peaceful celebration of Durga Puja,” said DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said while speaking at a coordination meeting on security arrangement at DMP headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday.
