Around 30 students were injured in a clash between two residential halls unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday midnight over a trifling issue.
Most of the injured students were the residents of Al Beruni hall. Among them, 6 students are now undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College and Hospital.
Source said the clash erupted between Mir Mosharraf Hossain (MMH) and Al Beruni hall unit BCL when BCL activist Abu Sayeed of MMH hall allegedly harassed a female student of 47th batch of Management Studies department at Chourangi point around at 9 pm.
Later, the female student informed her friend Ashik, a BCL activist of Al Beruni Hall. He rushed to the spot with his friends and beat up Sayeed there. Following the incident, around at 11pm, over 50 BCL activists of MMH Hall, led by BCL Vice-President Azim Hossain Ratan and hall unit activist Robiul Islam, attacked Al Beruni hall unit BCL activists who were taking position at Chourongi point of the university.
A chase and counter chase occurred between the BCL activists of two halls for an hour while two rounds of bullets were also fired during that time and a motorbike was also set on fire, source said. Abu Sadat Sayem, vice-president of JU unit BCL and residential student of Al Beruni hall, said, “Around 15 to 20 students of our hall were seriously injured and more 30 students also took primary treatment from the university medical centre”. He also demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers in this regard.
Meanwhile, students of Al Beruni hall locked the main entrance of the dean office of Biological Sciences faculty and took position in front of the faculty building around at 8am demanding justice from the university authority.
Later, JU Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam with Proctorial body and BCL president and secretary rushed to the spot. Students withdrew agitation after being assured by JU VC and BCL leaders. As question papers were stored in the dean office of the faculty, university, authority was compelled to delay the ongoing admission test for 30 minutes to start.
While talking to JU BCL President Jewel Rana said, “We will take action against the activists if we found their involvement”. He also said they will help the university authority to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, denying the allegation of attack, BCL activists of MMH hall demanded justice and alleged that students of Al Beruni hall set a motorbike on fire. When contacted JU Proctor Sikder Md Zulkarnine said, “After being informed about the clash we rushed to the spot in the midnight and brought the situation under control”. A number of law enforcers have also been deployed on the campus to avoid further unwanted situation on the campus during the admission test, he added. Meanwhile, BCL leaders and activists of AL Beruni hall met JU VC Professor Farzana Islam in this regard.
