3-day Heritage Handloom Festival begins in capital today

A three-day ‘Heritage Handloom Festival-2018’ will begin today at the hall room of Khazana Gardenia in the capital’s Gulshan 2 area.

Aiming at promoting local handloom products, Association of Fashion Designers of Bangladesh (AFDB) and SME Foundation have jointly organised the festival for the first time.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith will inaugurate the festival as chief guest today at 1pm, while Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will be present as special guest.

In a seamless blend of artistic creativity from diverse cultures and traditions, the exhibition will have over 30 stalls displaying unique products made from seven heritage products: Jamdani, Nakshi Kantha, Mirpur benarasi, Tangail Taant, Sirajgonj Taant (Lungi, Gamcha, Sarees), Rangamati Handloom and Monipuri Handloom. Weavers from these 7 sectors have been trained and mentored jointly by AFDB, SMEF and prominent artist Kanakchapa Chakma. Eminent fashion designers of the country are creating a wide range of clothing and accessories in each of these seven sectors to showcase the versatility of these products, while weavers and artisans will set up their stalls with diverse heritage products, designed exclusively for the festival.

The main highlight of the event will be the art of weaving where expert artisans from each sector will demonstrate the different techniques of weaving.

The main objective of this 3 day event is to revive and promote our heritage handloom products, facilitate the weavers with marketing and export opportunities and most importantly, encourage youth engagement in the handloom industry.

The handloom festival will be opened from 3pm to 10pm today and from 10am to 10pm on October 5 and 6).

Address: Khajana Gardenia Grand Hall, House - 08, Road - 51, Gulshan-2
