Authorities of Jahangirnagar University yesterday temporarily suspended four activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in connection with beating up a student of the university on the campus. JU Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam took the decision following a primary investigation. The suspended students are Shuvashish Ghosh of Bangla department and Ya Rafiu Shikder, Mustafizur Rahman and Sohel Rana of Public Administration department. All are activists of JU BCL unit and loyal to JU BCL Secretary Abu Sufian Chanchal.
Earlier the university authority suspended seven BCL activists as the order was passed through a press release. Later, the authorities called an emergency meeting in the afternoon and withdrew the suspension order of three activists.
However, a three-member probe body has been formed headed by Professor Haurnur Rashid of Drama and Dramatics department and they were asked to submit report within 15 working days.
When contacted JU Proctor Shikder Md Zulkarnine said, “We have recommended to JU authority that seven BCL activists be suspended after primary investigation. Later, the university authorities have decided to suspend four BCL activists.”
Earlier, Mahmudul Haque Shohag, a masters student of Journalism and Media Studies department and campus correspondent of an online news portal, was allegedly beaten up on September 24 by some BCL activists at Swimming Pool area on the campus. Later, he filed a complaint to JU authority.
Meanwhile, JU authorities temporarily suspended another alleged BCL man on charge of kidnapping a female student.
Jahidul Islam Sajal, a student of 43rd batch of Accounting and Information System department, was suspended following an allegation that he tried to kidnap a junior student of his department from Old Arts building premises on September 25. Later, students beat him up and handed him over to JU proctorial body.
