Explosion in Nat’l Fan factory kills 2

Two workers were killed and 32 injured in an explosion inside the heat chamber of the National Fan Factory in Gazipur’s Tongi BSCIC industrial area yesterday. The deceased were identified as Saiful Islam (18) and Shamsul Haque (20). Their detailed identities could not be known immediately. Station officer of Tongi fire service Atikur Rahman said the blast site was located on the first floor of the three-storey building. The accident occurred around 11 am. After the explosion, a fire broke out inside the factory that injured 34 workers. The victims were rescued by other workers and took them to Shahid Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital, where two workers later died.

On getting information, two fire fighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after half an hour. According to witnesses in the factory, a painting heater machine had exploded when some workers were drying a freshly-painted fan inside the heat chamber.

Residential medical officer of Shahid Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital Dr Mohammed Parvez Hossain said 18 injured workers were brought to the hospital. Later, eight of them with serious burn injuries were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

They were identified as Ripon (18), Kabir (25), Sajjad (17), Rasel (18), Raihan (25), Rimon (18), Lalchan (25), Mosharaf (19), Tanjima (22), Kakoli (20), Roni (25), Ashik (19), Atkiur (20), Akter (40), Akash (18), Alamgir (20), Babu (18) and Salma (18).

Following news of the explosion, the relatives of workers and a crowd of onlookers gathered in front of the factory.

OC of Tongi police station Kamal Hossain said additional law enforcement personnel were deployed at the spot to avoid any unwanted situation.

He informed that the assistant superintendent of Gazipur industrial police, Amirul Islam, and the additional superintendent of Gazipur metropolitan police, Ahsan Habib, visited the spot.

A five member committee led by additional district magistrate of Gazipur Moshiur Rahman was formed to probe the incident. The committee has to submit its report within seven working days.
