BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday filed a bail petition in the High Court in a case of arson in Cumilla’s Chauddagram upazila in 2015. In her petition, Khaleda challenged a Cumilla court order on September 13 that had rejected her bail plea in the case filed under the Special Powers Act.
“We will move the HC within a day or two for a hearing on the bail petition,” Barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman, one of the counsels for the BNP chief, told The Independent.
Police had submitted a chargesheet in court, accusing Khaleda and 32 others of vandalising a covered van in Chauddagram area on January 25, 2015. On August 13, the HC had cancelled its earlier order granting six-month bail to Khaleda in the case. The HC, however, directed the trial court in Cumilla to dispose of Khaleda’s bail petition in the case within seven days of receiving the order.
Meanwhile, another HC bench, led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim, started hearing the appeal filed by BNP chief challenging a Dhaka court verdict that convicted and sentenced her to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
The BNP chief has been lodged in jail ever since she was convicted on February 8.
