Bangladesh youth team reaches last four

Sports Reporter

The young Tigers’ bowlers once again put on a good performance to register a comprehensive five wickets victory against Hong Kong in their last Group B match in the Under-19 Asia Cup at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram yesterday.

Bangladesh will now move on to play the semi-final as the runner-up of the Group B, where they will meet Group A champion India on Thursday. Sri Lanka remained unbeaten when they won by 23 runs against Pakistan in their last group match and became the champions of Group B.

Bangladesh reached their target of 92 in just 11.2 overs after bundling Hong Kong out for 91 in 46.5 overs.

Winning the toss and opting to bowl first Bangladesh delivered early punches to put pressure on Hong Kong batsmen from the word go. Shoriful Islam, the left arm medium pacer from Panchagarh, nipped out opener Harpreet Singh for two runs inside the fifth over leaving Hong Kong for a wobbling 11 for 1.

Leg spinner Rishad Hossian again notched three wickets at the expense of 11 runs as only four Hong Kong batsmn (Kalhan Challu-16, Haroon Arshed-10, Adit Gorawara-16, Kabir Sodhi-13) reached double digits.

Mrittunjoy Chowdhury and Rakibul Hasan scalped two wickets each while Minhazur Rahman and Shamim Hossian picked up one wicket each.

Bangladesh began the match on a high note by restricting Hong Kong innings to a small total but they were unable to convey their bowling performance with the bat. The young Tigers clearly struggled with their batting as again it was upon the middle order batsmen to reach an easy target.

To mitigate the batting order problem, captain Towhid Hridoy moved up the flanks to open but he also failed to give a stable start for Bangladesh. Towhid lost his wicket to pacer Nasrulla Rana in just third over scoring only five runs from eight balls and in the next ball Shamim Hossain, who scored a stunning half century in the previous match against Pakistan a day before, was out for a naught. Nasrullah went on to pick up Sajid Hossain in his last ball of that over and opener Tanzid Hasan in the fifth over.

After the collapse of four wickets, Akbar Ali and Mahmudul Hasan Joy build a partnership that steered Bangladesh to reach the given target but this partnership couldn’t finish off the match as Akbar Ali (25) gave away his wicket in the 12th over, just before the last ball that Shoriful Islam put away for a boundary to end the match with a victory.

Rishad Hossain bagged the player of the match award for his brilliant performance with the ball.
