Lack of rain pushed the mercury up to 36.8 degree Celsius in Jasshore yesterday, the highest in the country, followed by Dhaka recording 35.6 degrees. Barring short bursts at a few places, there have been no showers for the past few days. This has made the weather sultry in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
Meteorologists at the Dhaka Met Office said the situation was mainly due to the monsoon withdrawal syndrome as the rainy season was set to end in the country by mid-October.
Earlier, September had recorded less than normal rain in line with sparse showers in the preceding months. However, monsoon had arrived early in June, preceded by unusual showers in March and April.
Monsoon is going to withdraw from the north-western part of Bangladesh in the next 72 hours, Met sources said.
They said the heat and humidity would continue with no prospect of rain today, barring some light to moderate showers at one or two places in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
The met sources, however, added that the temperature was unlikely to rise more than what was recorded yesterday.
