Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving with the United Nations African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) organised a free medical clinic for the local community in Dorti Camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in West Darfur, Sudan. The two-day event from September 23 to 24 was part of UNAMID’s military civilian coordination (CIMIC) activities aimed at helping Darfur’s most vulnerable people, said a UN press release yesterday.
Almost one thousand people, mostly internally displaced, benefited from the exercise in which Bangladeshi peacekeepers provided free medical assistance and distributed sports equipment to youth and children in the area.
The peacekeepers also used the occasion to plant trees at Dorti School, before participating in a football match between two teams from Dorti, and enjoying some local cultural performances.
Addressing all gathered at the event, Takako Ugaya, UNAMID representative, emphasised that humanitarian interventions taken by UNAMID, such as the free medical clinic, go a long way in addressing some health challenges faced by the local community in the area.
“It is our sincere hope that these tentative measures will contribute to the alleviation of suffering and strengthening of peace and stability among the people in Dorti,” she said.
Brigadier general Yasir Hammad of Sudan armed forces commended UNAMID Bangladeshi peacekeepers for their proactive role in providing the much-needed medical assistance to the local community.
“We appreciate UNAMID’s great efforts in providing support to the health and education needs in our area. The local community will forever remember this support,” he said.
Bangladeshi contingent commander, lieutenant colonel Mohamed Bashir noted that “the free medical clinic is a continuation of similar endeavours that have been undertaken by his contingent in West Darfur to assist the vulnerable communities”.
