2 AL men killed in Bagerhat attack over ‘internal feud’

Bagerhat: Two people were killed and another person was injured in an attack allegedly over Awami League infighting at Doibaggahati in Morelganj upazila on Monday, reports UNB.

The deceased were identified as Ansar Ali Dihidar, general secretary of Doibaggahati union unit of AL, and Sukur Sheikh, 42, an activist of the unit.

The injured, Bablu Sheikh, labour secretary of Tanti League’s Doibaggahati unit, was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Police super of the district Pankaj Chandra Roy said three miscreants wearing burqas swooped on the Doibaggahati union parishad complex in the afternoon and tried to kill its chairman Shahidul Islam.

However, the chairman’s supporters caught them and beat them mercilessly, killing one on the spot and injuring two others, he said, adding that one of the injured succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Two supporters of the UP chairman were arrested for interrogation over matter, the SP said.

However, injured Bablu claimed that armed cadres of Shahidul picked them up from Doibaggahati Bazar area in the afternoon and took them to the union parishad complex. “They forced us to wear burqas. Later, the chairman took us outside and started shouting saying we tried to kill him. His supporters swooped on us with arms and sticks,” he said.

He also claimed that they were victims of a planned conspiracy over previous enmity, he said.

Five of a family beaten for protesting stalking

Laxmipur: Five members of a family were beaten severely on Sunday night over protesting stalking of a madrasah student in Hazirpara area of Sadar upazila, reports UNB.

Locals said three young men—Sohan, Emon and Mohan—had long been harassing Taslima Akhter, daughter of Lutfar Rahman of Baraballavpur village in the upazila and a student of a local madrasah, on her way to and back home from her educational institution.

They harassed her on Sunday morning too and Taslima informed her parents and teachers of the incident who protested the stalking.

Being agitated, the stalkers swooped on Lutfar’s house at night with sticks and iron rods and beat five of the family members, including Lutfar, his wife and sons.

They also tried to abduct the girl by force, Lutfar claimed.

Officer-in-charge of Chandraganj Police Station Abul Kalam Azad said they were investigating the incident.

Man dies as tree  falls on him

Benapole: A young man was killed and another injured as a tree branch fell on them in Navaran Bazar area on Benapole-Jashore road on Sunday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Nur Hossain, 22, son of late Kadar Ali of Kashiadanga in Sharsha upazila.

Sergeant Politon Miah, in-charge of Navaran Highway Police camp, said a branch of the 100-year-old tree broke down and fell on the two youths around 9:30 pm while they were going through the road riding a motorcycle, leaving them injured.

Locals took the duo to Jessore General Hospital where Nur was declared dead, he said.

New private hospital inaugurated

MANIKGANJ: “Dr Josef Memorial Hospital”, a 30-bed private hospital, was inaugurated at Joynagar under Manikganj Pourasabha aiming to provide modern healthcare facilities to the people of the district, reports BSS.

“Present government is sincere enough for the development of private sector health care services for the wellbeing of common people,” the speakers said while speaking in the inaugural ceremony of the hospital.

Freedom Fighter Gazi Quamrul Huda Selim, mayor of Manikganj Pourasabha, addressed the function as the chief guest with founder and Chairman of the hospital Dr Trina Rubaiya Mamun, Prof of Florida University, USA in the chair. Executive Director of the hospital Md Habil Uddin, former Director of Health (Dhaka Division) Dr Md Shah Alam and former District Education Officer (DEO) Md Abdul Monnaf Khan spoke, among others, on the occasion.

“The government alone cannot ensure health facilities for the vast population of Bangladesh, so non-governmental organisations need to come forward to mitigate health problems of underprivileged people,” the sparkers said.

The 30-bed hospital facilities and services available include out-patients department (OPD) with eight cabins. At the initial stage, a few specialist doctors will provide treatments in several departments of the hospital.
