To protect Nabaganga River from encroachment and pollution, the locals formed a human chain in Jhenidah town on Sunday morning.
Nabaganga Rakkha Parishad, a platform to protect the river, organised the human chain at Jhenidah district post office intersection.
The gathering with various festoons, placards and other materials lasted for an hour where Nari Kalyan Sangstha president Dipti Rahman, environmentalist Masud Ahmed Sanju, Jhenidah Theatre president Ekramul Haque Liku, Ankur Natya Academy general secretary Najim Uddin Julias and Bihanga general secretary Shahinoor Alam Liton among others spoke. Speakers said a section of unscrupulous people have been grabbing the river banks and river beds for couple of years under the very nose of the authority.
But the authority after repeated discussion and pressure could not able stop the river grabbing.
They failed to evict all the illegal encroachers from the river bed and banks.
Further, they virtually did not take action against the people liable for throwing garbage and waste into the river yet. The protestors also urged the people to be aware against the illegal grabbing and waste dumping in the river.
Later, a seven-point memorandum was submitted to the deputy commissioner Saroj Kumar Nath.
