DUAA accords reception to finance minister

Marking the 70th founding anniversary, Dhaka University Alumni Association (DUAA) yesterday accorded reception to three personalities, including finance minister, for their outstanding contributions to politics, economic and social sectors. The reception was awarded to ‘Swadhinata Padak’ (Independence Award) winners – Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Agriculturist as well as media personality Shykh Seraj. Bangla Academy Rabindra Award winning singer Fahim Hossain Chowdhury was also accorded reception at a ceremony held at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building on DU campus. Earlier, DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the programme by cutting a cake. DUAA president AK Azad presided over the function while National Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam addressed it as the chief guest. While addressing the function, Finance Minister Muhith said, “Dhaka University is a unique university in this sub-continent as it has played a vital role in the formation of the nation. I am proud to be honoured by the Dhaka University Alumni Association.” Shykh Siraj said, “Bangladesh is an agriculture-based country, so I think it is important to highlight the bravery and the contribution of the agro-based marginalised people in the media.” Awami Swechchhasebak League President and DUAA Vice-president Molla Mohammad Abu Kawser and Secretary General of DUAA Ranjan Karmakar, among others, were present at the event.

‘Non-fiction Book’ fair begins in DU

A three-day ‘Non-fiction Book’ fair started on Dhaka University (DU) campus yesterday amid festivity. DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the fair by releasing colorful balloons around 10.30am at Business Studies Faculty premises. “The ancient books reserved in world famous libraries and museums, are mostly non-fictions. Modern cultures are developed through studying those books. So, it is very necessary to read these books,” Prof Akhtaruzzaman said. He requested the teachers of the faculty to emphasise on students’ technical and practical knowledge. The fair was jointly organised by Daily Bonik Barta and Faculty of Business Studies for the fourth time. After the inauguration, Prof Akhtaruzzaman visited all the 21 stalls of publishers and research organizations who are participating in the fair. Dean of DU Business Faculty Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam, Editor of Bonik Barta Dewan Hanif Mahmud, Managing Director & CEO of Agrani bank Mohammad Shams-Ul Islam were present among others. The fair remains open for all from 10am to 8pm every day till October 2.

Sports practice vital for building developed Bangladesh: Nahid

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said there is no alternative to practice sports  for building developed Bangladesh led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He said the Bangladesh has now become capable of raising its head in the global arena as the girls have already shown outstanding performance in various sports events side by side with the boys. The minister was addressing the inaugural session of the 47th Summer National Sports Competition- 2018 at Government Physical Education College in Rajshahi city as chief guest yesterday. Bangladesh National School, Madrasha and Technical Education Sports Association organised the five-day event in association with Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, Rajshahi. A total of 528 students including 264 girls from 80 educational institutions across the country splitting into four groups are taking part in around 50 events and sub-events of the competition. Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, addressed the opening session as special guests. Nahid said sports, physical practice and cultural activities always play pivotal role towards physical and mental flourishing of students.
