Seminar marking world habitat day today
Nature Study Society of Bangladesh (NSSB) and Edward M. Kennedy Centre for Public Service and the Arts (EMK) will organise a seminar marking the The World Habitat Day on Monday at EMK Center in the city’s Dhanmondhi area. Vice-chancellor of University of Liberal Arts Prof Jahirul Haque will be present as chief guest and the Director of EMK Centre Naveed Akbar will preside over the programme, said a press release yesterday. Brand Ambassador (JU) of NSSB Aflatun Kaeser Zilany will speak on the topic titled ‘Engaging youth in turning waste into resources’ while Founder Director of NSSB Captain Kawsar Mostafa will discuss on ‘Solid Waste Management’.
Fire breaks out at Karail slum
A fire has broken out in the Jamaibazar area of the capital’s sprawling Karail slum, as of Sunday night. Sources at the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters control room said the fire originated at around 9:30 pm. Four firefighter units rushed to the spot and started bringing the fire under control, said on-duty officer of the control room without being able to elaborate immediately.
4 burnt in gas cylinder blast
Four friends sustained burn injuries as a gas cylinder exploded at a tea stall in the capital’s Kafrul area on Saturday noon. They have been identified as Abu Hena Mostafa Babu, 32, Sunny Ahmed, 27, Kamal Hossain, 30, and Polash, 30. Quoting doctors, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police outpost sub-inspector (SI) Bacchu Mia said all four of the injured were taken to the DMCH Burn Unit. Two of them, Babu and Sunny, are in critical condition. Victims’ friend Shabbir, who was with them but managed to escape relatively unhurt, said six of them (including Shabbir) were taking tea and smoking at the tea stall in the area.
Durga Puja at 30,000 mandaps
The Durga Puja will be celebrated at over 30,000 Puja Mandaps (pandals) across the country this year. This was announced at a meeting of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad (BPUP) at Dhakeswari National Temple in Dhaka on Saturday. As many as 30,077 permanent and temporary pandals were erected in the country including 231 in the capital city last year. Beginning on October 15, the five-day celebration will end on October 19 with immersion of Goddess Durga in the capital as elsewhere across the country. Leaders BPUP urged people of the country to celebrate the Durga Puja amid enthusiasm.
Training for journalists ends
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) held a two-day-long first aid training for the members of Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA). A total of 30 university reporters from different media outlets participated in the workshop ended here yesterday at the CIRDAP auditorium here. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) facilitated the training course. Abdou Latif Mbacke, deputy head of delegation of ICRC, handed over certificates among participants. After completing the training sessions, the young journalists are now capable to save a patient or wounded person with immediate care and support with some life saving techniques. The training will help newsmen in their professional life as sometimes they face violent situation while performing duties, Mbacke said in his speech.
Nat’l productivity day today
Bangladesh will observe the National Productivity Day on October 2 for creating mass awareness to increase productivity in different sectors including agriculture, industry and service sectors. The main theme of the day this year is ‘Productivity for Developing Happy and Prosperous Country.’ Marking the day, National Productivity Organisation (NPO) has chalked out elaborate programmes.
