Huge traffic congestion on highways, especially on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, caused immense sufferings to the home going passengers and transport workers for the third consecutive day yesterday.  Although the authorities concerned have taken steps to keep the highways congestion free to reduce public hassle, every effort seemed wasted. Tailback was reported on the Dhaka-Aricha highway although the local police introduced special patrol on the road. Despite 80 policemen on 40 bikes tried their best, traffic could not be managed smoothly.
Tailbacks were also reported in Rajbari and Munshiganj as well as vehicles stood in long queues for house at ferry terminals in both these districts. In Gazipur, about 1200 police and Ansar men have been deployed on the Dhaka-tangail, Dhaka-Gazipur highways to manage traffic. However, a long tailback was seen on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the morning. Witnesses said the tailback was created on Chandra intersection in Gazipur to Tangail bypass in Tangail because of the heavy flow of cattle-laden trucks on the highway following the torrential rain of the last three days, leaving several thousand vehicles stranded. Vehicles were seen moving bumper-to-bumper on the highway. This important highway of the country experienced 70km congestion from Chandra to Tangail by-pass, witnesses said. The congestion eased a little in the afternoon, said Humayn Kabir, officer-in-charge of Gorai highway police station. He also said another cause to the traffic congestion was the pressure of vehicles on the Bangabandhu Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge in Tangail. Passengers on the highway especially children, women and the elderly people suffered as many transports stranded for long time on the highway. Left lane transports were moving slowly but the right lane transports bound for Dhaka have become stranded in many points.
