National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Mizanur Rahman yesterday said the policemen, who are accused of killing protesters in Kalihati of Tangail, should be tried under the penal code. “The withdrawal of accused cops who fired on peaceful protesters cannot be a punishment. They should be tried in murder cases. We want the state to prove its mentality of trying these perpetrators. We want to see that the state believes in the rule of law. We want to see this in the judgment of cases filed in connection with the killing of innocent people,” Mizanur Rahman said. He was visiting a woman and her son, for whose assault people in Kalihati upazila of Tangail took to the street in protest, at Tangail Medical College Hospital.
On Friday, hundreds of local people took to the streets protesting the assault of a mother and her son on September 15. A clash erupted when police intercepted the demonstration. Later three people died on the spot after police opened fire on the demonstrators. Another died at a hospital later. NHRC also snubbed the argument of the acting inspector general of police (IGP) that a third party instigated the police-demonstrators clash. “The argument is illogical and not acceptable at all. The comment of the acting IGP proves the audacity of the police. If the police use arms without a proper ground, there remains no difference between
a police and a criminal,” the NHRC chief said.
He also said that he did not want to see the police in the role of criminals and that there was no scope to give political colour to the incident.
“The state and the administration cannot be silent as spectators in face of such kind of brutality when a mother is violated in front of her son. The NHRC will supervise and monitor the further proceedings into the matter,” he added.
Meanwhile, two officers-in-charge (OCs) were withdrawn from respective police stations in Tangail yesterday.
The OCs, Moklesur Rahman of Ghatail Police Station and Shahidul Islam of Kalihati Police Station, have been withdrawn and closed to Dhaka Range Police Lines to facilitate the probe into the killing of four people during a clash with police, Acting Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjay Dutta said.
Earlier, seven cops were also closed in connection with the incident.
A three-member team has also been formed to probe the incident. Additional District Magistrate Sarwar Hosain will lead the team.
