Landslides kill 8, more rain likely

Special Correspondent

At least eight people were killed in Bandarban and Chittagong after heavy rain since Saturday triggered landslides in the hills.
A woman and her child were buried alive when their house collapsed under landslides following 31mm of rainfall, in Chttagong city’s Baizid area below a hill, yesterday (Monday) morning.
On Saturday, six people were killed in landslides in the hill district of Bandarban where rain caused havoc, reports said.
The rain slowed down yesterday, but is likely to be back today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday). The meteorological department issued a warning for further landslides in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. Rain may return as the low over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north-west Bay moved further north- westward over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas.

As long as it stays overland turning into a land depression, rain is likely in Bangladesh, as it runs into the monsoon axis rallying the monsoon over the country.
The met office forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, at  most places in Rangpur, Dhaka, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. There will be heavy to very heavy falls at places in the five divisions and moderately heavy falls elsewhere in the country during the next 24 hours, beginning at 6:00pm yesterday.
The day and night temperatures could drop slightly over the country, it added.
The weather office has advised the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra to hoist the local cautionary signal number three. Fishing boats have been told to negotiate the heavy seas cautiously along the coast because the North Bay has become choppy with squally winds.
