Police deployed on highway to ensure smooth journey

GAZIPUR: A large number of police, including community police, Ansar, have been deployed on different highways in Gazipur to ensure the smooth journey of the homebound people. Sakhawat Hossain, assistant superintendent of Gazipur traffic police, yesterday afternoon told The Independent that a total of 1057 police and Ansar and 1000 community police members have been deployed at different important points on Dhaka-Mymensing highway and Dhaka-Tangail highway from Monday morning.
He said a long tailback was created on Dhaka-Tangail highway in the morning because of the flow of the cattle-laden trucks on the highway following the torrential rain of the last two days, leaving several thousand vehicles stranded.
However, Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) of Dhaka range SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman visited several points on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Chandra area of Gazipur yesterday. Later, he briefed the local journalists at Chandra police box. He said, We have taken all necessary arrangements ahead of Eid to control the traffic congestion on the highways so that the homebound people can reach their home safely and celebrate Eid smoothly and peacefully. Nuruzzaman said additional police, Ansar, community police and volunteers of transport associations will work till September 30 on the highways to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
