The government has imposed a ban on catching of hilsa fish from September 25 to October 9 in 190-kilometre area of the Meghna River stretching from Chandpur to Satnol in Patuakhai.
The step has been taken to facilitate breeding of hilsa. Sources said it is the breeding time as mother hilsa fish come to the River Meghna and Tetulia from the Bay of Bengal for laying eggs in sweet water.
The ban will be effective for the districts Chandpur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Laxmipur, Noakhal, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar. During the breeding time catching of hilsa, carrying, trading, transportation or storage is totally banned.
A mobile team comprising executive magistrate, police and coast guard will conduct drives in the river and fish markets to enforce the ban. When contacted, Pritish Kumar Mollick, the district fishery officer of Bhola, said they have launched a motivational campaign against catching of hilsa during the ban period.
Selim Reza, deputy commissioner of Bhola, said the administration is determined to ensure safe breeding of hilsa during the ban time at any cost.
