25th School Handball (Boys and Girls) Tournament-2018, sponsored by Polar Icecream will get underway at two different venues in Dhaka today. The opening matches of the both girls’ and boys’ section-Viqarunnisa School and College vs South Point School (girls) and Ideal School and College vs Willes Little Flower School and College (boys) will be played at Shaheed Captain Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder is expected to inaugurate the tournament as chief guest.
Golam Habib, chairman of the tournament committee, stated all at the press conference at the BHF conference room of the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
BHF general secretary Asaduzzaman Kohinoor, Polar Icecream marketing manager Abdullah Al Mamun, tournament committee secretary (girls) Nasima Parveen Putul and tournament committee secretary (boys) Selim Mia Babul were also present.
“This year a highest number of 36 school and college, 20 for the boy’s and 16 for the girls, will take part in the 25th-milestone edition of the school handball, the feat will be celebrated by Bangladesh Handball Federation (BHF) with special arrangement,” Golam Habib informed.
Kohinnor in their special programme said, “We’ve arranged an exhibition match involving former players following a colourful rally on Friday. Then we will host an award-giving ceremony, where the highest number of champions (Viqarunnisa) and runners-up (Narinda school and college) will be awarded with best coach and player.”
The organizers leaked that they have earmarked a handsome budget of Tk 11.88 lakh from where the lion’s share of the budget (Tk11.50 lakh) will be collected from the sponsor. Of them, Tk 6.10 lakh for boy’s and Tk 5.77 lakh for girls division will be used to run the 62-match meet smoothly.
The tournament will be evolved through group leg system. Boys’ teams, splitting into six groups, from where each group champions will join with the reigning champions and the runners up in the eight teams’ Super League’ that will be held in two groups from September 23.
The group champions and the runners up will move into the semifinal will be decided on September 24. The final and third-place deciding match will be staged on September 25.
