The squad they named for the upcoming ACC Under-19 Asia Cup has no dearth of talent says Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) age-group selector Hannan Sarker.
Sarker also said that the team will play in final though the bulk of the players don’t have experience to play enough games in competitive cricket.
“Shoriful Islam, who is the only the experienced player in our U-19 team, means only, played for HP and A team before performing Premier League last year. But the remaining of the players came from playing first or second division. They’re also talented no doubt but they did not get enough chance to play competitive cricket,” said Hannan Sarker.
“The team played a string of practice matches in Khulna and Chittagong. We’ve taken an idea from those games that they’re a good challenging team and have future prospect. Now what they’re doing is not bad but they’ve needed some more times to be adjusted with the competitive cricket,” Sarker told media at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.
“As Asia Cup is being held at our home turf, we’re taking our preparation in Chattogram for so many days. I think we’ll do better result. We’ll play our first match against Sri Lanka. And then, we’ll get the real state of our team where they’re in competitive cricket and how much we can do in the tournament,” he added.
Bangladesh had a couple of players the likes of Afif Hossain and Nayeem Hasan who both could play this Asia Cup but they didn’t keep them in the squad because their ultimate target is the next World Cup as selector said that they’re preparing them targeting that showpiece event for the youth, which will be in South Africa in 2020.
He said that they have a string of reciprocal series against Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand ahead of them before the U-19 World Cup. Hopefully they will be matured enough for the competitive cricket by playing those games. Just after the Asia Cup, they will travel to Sri Lanka first in October.
“-------We’ve a World Cup in 2020. Before that World Cup, we don’t want to introduce Rishad because we want that he stays with us till the world cup. In the meantime, he prepares himself,” he thinks.
“We’ve games in many countries ahead-Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand. If Rishad could play at every place he will go to a good place. Then he will be placed next to the national team. We think we all should have focused on U-19,” he continued.
When asked about leg-spinner Shakib Hasan, the selector said that they have included Rishad as they kept him ahead of Shakib.
