2 killed in Cumilla road crashes

Two people, including the driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, were killed in separate road accidents on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Cumilla yesterday.

Auto-rickshaw driver Sabuj Mia, 22, son of Hafiz Md Hanif of Fuler Nauri village in the upazila, died on the spot when his auto-rickshaw turned turtle on the highway in Gunabati area around 12 pm, said Assistant Sub-inspector Rezaul Karim of Chouddagram Police Station.

In another incident on the highway, an unidentified man died on the spot when a speeding bus hit him in Times Square area, said the SI.

Man held with 40 gold bars

Members of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested a man along with 40 gold bars, weighing 4.64 kilograms, from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport yesterday.

The arrestee was identified as Zahid Mia, 40, of Shekhghat Kalapara area in the city.

APBn Additional Superintendent Joynal Abedin said Biman flight BG EA-228 coming from Abu Dhabi landed here around 6:45 am. Tipped off, a team of APBn conducted a search operation in the flight and recovered the gold bars from under a seat.

Man stabbed to death

An expatriate was stabbed to death over a previous enmity at Jora Meher village in Sadar upazila in Cumilla on Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Shahid Miah, 55, son of Momtaz Miah of the village.

Locals said Shahid had been at loggerheads with Ripon, 30, son of Azgar Ali of the village. Ripon stabbed Shahid around 8pm over the enmity, leaving him injured.

The expatriate was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Police said they were investigating the killing.

3 killed in separate incidents

Three people were killed in separate incidents in Chattogram city and district on Tuesday. Among the victims, one was killed by electrocution, a building owner killed after falling from his under construction building and a pedestrian killed by road accident.

In the first incident, electrician Anwar Hossain, 40, was electrocuted while he was repairing an Air cooler in city’s Agrabad Commercial area around 10 am.

He was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) but the attending doctors declared him death.

6,198 cases filed for traffic rule violation

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the streets of capital on Tuesday filed 6,198 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violation. It also realised over 57.78 lakh as fine for traffic rule violation, said an official release.

Of the total cases, 486 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 126 for using hydraulic horn, 12 for using hooter and beckon light and 22 others for using tinted glass.
