Sexual harassment charge against registrar to be probed

The Barishal University (BU) authorities have formed an inquiry committee to look into allegations of sexual harassment of a female official by the BU registrar, Manirul Islam .
The probe committee was formed after a written complaint, with a video CD, reached the BU Teachers Association and the university authorities yesterday (Wednesday).
The BU Teachers Association demanded that the VC order an investigation into the allegation, which was ignored earlier by the BU authorities.
Dr SM Imamul Haque, vice-chancellor of BU, without mentioning names of the probe committee members, said he has formed a three-member probe committee, and asked it to submit its report within 15 working days.
However, BU sources said university syndicate committee member, Dr Muhsin Uddin, dean of the Arts Faculty, will head the probe committee. The other members are Rahat Hussain Faisal, chairman, CSE department of BU, and Prof Md. Yunus, chairman Barishal Education Board.
A Video CD, that became viral on the internet, shows the accused asking a female official of BU to meet him at his residence alone. He also shows her his private organ.
The BU Teachers Association held a protest rally in front of the campus entrance, said Hena Rani Biswas, acting president of the association.
Abu Zafar Mia, secretary, Tanvir Kaisar, former secretary of the association, and others addressed the rally. Teachers, employees and students were present.
Speakers at the rally said the registrar of a university is a vital post and many people have to meet him regularly.
But after such an incident, female teachers, employees and even girl students will not feel safe with this man.
