HC to hear Shahidul bail plea Sunday

The High Court is likely to hear a bail petition of imprisoned internationally noted photographer Shahidul Alam on Sunday.While Shahidul counsel moved before the HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman yesterday for hearing on the petition filed by Shahidul seeking bail in a case filed under the ICT act, the HC bench said that the bail plea would be included in the cause list of upcoming Sunday for hearing.

Talking to reporters, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, a lawyer for Shahidul, said that the HC bench did not hear the petition Wednesday as it was not included in the cause list. The HC bench is likely to hold hearing on the petition on next Sunday, he added.
This is Shahidul Alam’s second bail plea moved before the High Court seeking bail in a case filed under controversial ICT Act for “spreading propaganda against the government”. Shahidul moved before the HC bench for bail after a Dhaka court on September 11 rejected his bail petition in a case filed against him under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act on charge of spreading propaganda and false information against the government.
Judge KM Imrul Kayes of Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka on September 11 rejected his bail plea. Barrister Sara Hossain, another counsel for Shahidul, told reporters that remarks that Shahidul alleged to have made there was no mention in FIR (First Information Report) where he made it. But, the court did not grant his bail. Hence, we moved before the HC again for his bail in the case, she added. Shahidul Alam, 63, was detained by plainclothes police from his home after he gave an interview to Al Jazeera about student protests which he documented and discussed in Facebook Live on August 5.
