With the aim of attracting $ 1.25 billion investment and generating 0.15 million jobs for local people, Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) has launched a project to set up an economic zone at Mirsarai of Chittagong, reports BSS.
The project, BEPZA Economic Zone, Mirsarai (1st phase) is also expecting to generate $ 1.50 billion export earning annually to boost the socio-economic development of the country, said officials of planning ministry.
To this end, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has given nod to this project and allocated Tk 750 crore from the national exchequer.
BEPZA under the Prime Minister’s Office is entrusted to implement the first phase of the project by June, 2021, said the officials.
About the project, Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal said, the Prime Minister has given directives to construct the drainage system of the economic zone following scientific manners along with the central effluent treatment plant (CETP).
Earlier, the Governing Body of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) in its fourth meeting decided to allocate around 1,200 acres of land to BEPZA to set up the economic zone at Mirsarai.
BEPZA in the first phase would set up 250 industrial units in the economic zone by developing land and other infrastructures, according to the Development Project Proforma (DPP).
