Blood is considered as the most important fuel of any living being. To give blood, you need neither extra strength nor extra food, and you will save a life.

Annual demand for blood in Bangladesh is around eight lakh (800,000) units, whereas seven lakh (700,000) units are collected against the estimated demand. But it is a matter of happiness that in our country, many voluntary blood donors’ organisations are now working actively for increasing blood donation. Rangdhonu Blood Drivers is such an organisation.

KM Amir Hossain, along with a group of health conscious youths of Chandina in Cumilla district, formed the organisation in February 2017 with the slogan, ‘Donate Blood, Save Life’. They work for increasing voluntary blood donation for underprivileged people of the society. Their donated blood helps people who have lost blood in an accident or need blood during surgery, or those who have an illness, such as anaemia, sickle cell disease, haemophilia, thalassaemia, etc, and need regular transfusions.

Blood donation is a life-saving service to our fellow human beings. Rangdhonu Blood Drivers motivate people to donate blood voluntarily as part of their social responsibility. They also help the distressed, flood-affected people of different areas by raising funds, collecting used clothes, and supplying dry foods.

Their key activities include motivating the general people to give blood voluntarily for patients, organise awareness programmes on blood-related issues, and more. They go to different areas and raise awareness. After the start of their campaign, people are now aware of the importance of blood donation and the number of people interested in donating blood is on the rise there. Every month, they manage to collect about 250 to 300 bags of blood.

The organisation has around 1,500 members. Amir Hossain, president of Rangdhonu Blood Drivers, said: "Our blood cells die after three months, and then new blood cells are formed. If we can motivate people to donate blood, it will save many lives. Rangdhonu Blood Drivers wants to make blood donation a social movement and our ultimate goal is that none should die from lack of blood and every person knows their blood group. Beside blood donation campaigning, we also help the distressed, flood-affected people."

The organisation is creating social awareness through blood grouping camps; and leaflets and booklets are distributed on the benefits of blood donation among the people. Blood donation not only makes the receiver's life good, but also helps the donor to maintain good health, according to medical science. Let’s donate blood and feel the thrill of life. Rangdhonu Blood Drivers is a real friend in need, hope of ray in the dark.
