18 accused in 21 Aug case still on the run

As Dhaka first Speedy Trial Tribunal is expected to set date of judgement in the two cases lodged over August 21 grenade attack today, 18 accused including BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman out of total 52 are still at large, reports BSS. Of the 52 accused, name of three including Huji leader Mufti Abdul Hannan and Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid have been executed in other cases and their names have been dropped. The fugitives are- Tarique Rahman, Mawlana Tajuddin, Haris Chowdhury, Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, Md Hanif, Mohibul Muttakin, Anisul Mursalin, Mufti Shafikur Rahman, Ratul Ahmed Babu, Jahangir Alam Badar, Md Khalil, Md Iqbal, Mawlana Liton, Mufti Abdul Hai, ATM Amin, Saiful Islam Joarder, Obaidur Rahman Khan and Khan Sayeed Hasan.

 “All the fugitives, who have been charged for maximum punishment, have got state defence to defend their cases. Only fugitives ATM Amin, Saiful Islam Joarder, Obaidur Rahman Khan and Khan Sayeed Hasan haven’t got any counsels to defend their cases,” prosecutor Farhana Reza told BSS earlier.

Of the accused, 23 including former state minister Lutfuzzaman Babar and deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu are in jail, while eight are on bail.

The accused, who are on bail are- BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s nephew Saiful Islam Deuk, Ashraful Huda, Shahidul Haque, Khoda Boksh Chowdhury, Ruhul Amin, Munshi Atikur Rahman, Abdur Rashid and Ariful Islam.

A total of 225 prosecution witnesses testified in the case, while 20 witnesses were produced by the defence.
