DUCSU election

DU files leave to appeal against HC order

STAFF REPORTER

The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have filed a leave-to-appeal petition before the Supreme Court (SC) against the High Court (HC) order that directed the university authorities to hold the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election within six months. Madhu Maloti Chowdhury Barua, advocate-on-record, filed the appeal on behalf of the DU authorities on Sunday.

An HC bench yesterday (Monday) dropped a contempt petition from the hearing list. It had been filed by 25 former DU students against the university vice-chancellor, proctor and treasurer for not holding the DUCSU election in line with the High Court directive. However, advocate Manzill Murshid, counsel for the petitioners, told reporters that he

would mention the petition before another HC bench for hearing. Murshid also said that DU’s appeal contradicted its ongoing discussion with student leaders in the name of holding the DUCSU election by March. On Sunday, leaders of different student organisations demanded immediate DUCSU election, due since 1990, ensuring peaceful coexistence of student bodies and a healthy political atmosphere on the campus as the university authorities held a meeting with them.

On September 12, a contempt of court plea was filed before the HC against DU vice-chancellor Prof. Akhtaruzzaman, proctor AKM Golam Rabbani and treasurer Kamal Uddin for not taking steps to hold the DUCSU election in compliance with its earlier directive.

Manzill Murshid filed the petition on behalf of those who had filed a writ petition on the issue. On September 4, Manzill Murshid served a contempt of court notice to the DU vice-chancellor and two others seeking their explanation as to why they did not take steps to hold the DUCSU election.

On January 17, the HC asked the DU authorities to take steps within the next six months to hold the DUCSU election. A writ petition was filed by 25 DU students in March 2012, seeking its order to compel the authorities concerned to hold the election. The last DUCSU election took place on June 6, 1990, and students have been demanding polls for a long time.
