Islamic Front to contest next polls under AL alliance

The Islamic Front Bangladesh (IFB), a registered Islamic political party, has decided to contest the upcoming national election under the greater alliance led by the Awami League (AL). “We have been with the greater alliance since 2004. We don’t want to see ‘anti-Liberation War forces’ or their allies in power. So, we have decided join the greater alliance for contesting the election. The AL's policymakers have also shown us the ‘green light’,” said IFB chairman Syed Bahadur Shah Mojaddedi at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday. He claimed that they have already held several meetings with AL general secretary Obaidul Quader and AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim, who is also coordinator of the 14-party alliance.

Although they agreed to take the front in the 14-party alliance, Left party leaders are opposing them. As a result, they are joining the greater alliance, he said. “We have made preparations to contest in 100 seats in the coming elections. But we will want 20 seats for the front candidates. If the AL, the major partner of the greater alliance, allows us the seats, we will contest under the alliance,” he also said.

He further said they will participate in the elections to ensure a free and fair poll. To join the election, a conference of the party’s activists will be held on September 30 this year. The party’s secretary general, Jainul Abedin Jubair, senior leader Solaiman Farid, Shahidul Alam Rijvy and Islami Chhatra Sena president Muhammad Naimuddin attended the programme.
