Mercury rises to 35.6C in Dhaka

The sun was merciless over the city yesterday with no sign of any cloud cover.  Although it was an autumn day, commuters and schoolchildren felt the heat when stuck in traffic under a blazing sun. The day's maximum temperature was 35.6 degrees Celsius, without any relief in the form of rainy interludes for the second day. Meteorologists promised some rain today (Tuesday) despite a less active rmonsoon.

Residents of the southwestern town of Jessore felt most of the heat in the country, recording the highest maximum temperature of  36,4C, together with southern island of Bhola.

Meteorologists said such a situation may persist today unless it rains overnight with winds. The monsoon might soon receive a fillip in the form of a low-pressure area in the central and south-west bay. This may help generate humidity to reinforce the southerly winds to convert into dark rain-bearing clouds. This may happen by Wednesday. Farmers in the north are praying for rain for their aman crops that need rain water to grow in initial stages.
