Leaders of the quota reform movement yesterday demanded the publishing of a gazette over abolition of quota in government jobs, welcoming the suggestion made by the government committee to get rid of quota system in the Class I and II jobs. The leaders, protesting under the banner of Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council, also said they would continue class boycott until a gazette is published and announced to hold rallies across the country today demanding a gazette notification over the quota reform.
“The recommendations by the committee to abolish quota in 1st class and 2nd class government jobs is only a suggestion by the committee and not a government gazette. So, we do not feel reassured and want a gazette notification from the government. We have seen similar assurances before, but those did not bring any change to the quota system,” Hasan Al Mamun , convener of the quota reform protest forum said at a press briefing in front of the Central Library of the University Of Dhaka yesterday afternoon.
Mamun said that their demands to the government are very clear and precise, as they have made three specific demands. “First, we want the withdrawal of all fake cases filed against the quota reform protesters; second, we demand punishment to those who attacked us during the protests; and third and the most important is the publishing of a gazette over the quota reformation as soon as possible. But the government is yet to fulfill any of other demands,” he said.
“Now the quota reform committee has made a suggestion. Their recommendations are appreciable, but we cannot be reassured until we see the gazette published,” the quota reform movement leader added. “We will not go back to the class until our demands are met and tomorrow (Tuesday) we will hold countrywide protest rallies demanding the gazette notification,” he further said. Other quota reform leaders and some students were present at the briefing.
