Brahmaputra shows further rise in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: The Brahmaputra, one of the mighty rivers in the country, registered further rise at its water monitoring station here in last 24 hours as of 9 am today, creating flood like situation in chars and river basin areas of the district, reports BSS.

Bangladesh Water Development Board officials said water levels in the Brahmaputra river rose by 5 cm during the period due to on rush of hilly waters from the upstream and incessant rainfall in last few days.

But this morning, the river was flowing 7 cm above its danger mark at Fulchharighat point, even though other three major rivers — the Ghagot, the Karotoa and the Teesta — were flowing below their respective danger levels.

As water levels in Brahmaputra river have risen, chars and river basin areas of Horipur and Kapasia unions under Sundarganj upazila, Kamarjani and Mollarchar unions of Sadar upazila, Fazlupur, Erendabari, Gozaria, Urya and Fulchhari unions in Fulchhari upazila and Holdia and Saghata unions of Saghata upazila here have been inundated.

Hundreds of people of the unions have been marooned, facing untold sufferings and the standing crops like T-Aman and summer vegetables have also gone under flood water, said Abdus Salam Jakir, chairman of Kamarjani union.

With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra river, the erosion has taken serious turn at different places on the both river side including Goghat, Kunderpara, Kamarjani and Ratanpur, locals said.
