BNP vice chairmen at a meeting with party standing committee members yesterday extended their full support to the party move to forge a greater national unity with likeminded parties to press the government to hold the next general elections in a free, fair and inclusive manner. Most of the vice chairmen out of 22 who joined the meeting, held at the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office, also agreed to compromise with the likeminded parties for the sake of forging a greater unity, meeting sources revealed. While talking to The Independent, several vice chairmen, who were present at the over one hour meeting, said that majority of them opined that the party should not contest the forthcoming election keeping Khaleda Zia behind bars.
“No Khaleda, no election” - was their opinion, said a vice chairman seeking anonymity.
He said the meeting, chaired by party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was arranged to get views of the party vice chairmen about movement to free Khaleda, forging national unity and participation in the next general election.
The vice chairmen also favoured the party demands for the release of Khaleda, to hold the next polls under a neutral administration after dissolution of the Parliament, reconstitution of the Election Commission and deployment of Army during the polls.
