The High Court yesterday directed the government to demolish in next seven days the structures built beyond the layout plan in Hatirjheel-Begunbari project in Dhaka. The court also issued a rule upon the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to protect the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project according to the layout plan. The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) challenging the legality of the constructed structures beyond the layout plan in the project.
During the hearing today, petitioner's counsel Advocate Monjil Morshed told the HC that some structures including restaurants have been built in the project illegally beyond the layout plan.
Those structures have been creating obstruction to the free movement of people in the project area and have damaged the beauty of the project.
He prayed to the court to pass a necessary order to protect the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project.
