130 sacks of stolen rice recovered

Mymensingh Detective Branch (DB) of police recovered 130 sacks of stolen rice from Sanandabari in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur district on Friday night.
The detectives earlier arrested four thieves for their involvement in stealing the rice from two rice mills here recently.Police sources said the thieves stole 196 sacks of rice from Master Auto Rice Mills in  Tarakanda upazila on September 9 and 259 sacks of rice from Satata Rice Mills in Phulpur upazila on  September 14. Separate cases were lodged with the respective police stations. An investigating team of DB police, led by sub-inspector Mafizul Islam, raided Sanandabari area and arrested four thieves identified as Anwar Hossain, 38, Ripon Miah, 30, Farhad Hossain, 38, and Raihan Miah, 45. Later, following their confessional statement, police recovered 130 sacks of rice from Raihan’s possession, said Imarat Hossain Gazi, officer-in-charge of DB police.
Erosion victims form human chain

Thousands of erosion victims formed a huge human chain and held a rally on Friday on the river bank in Ilisha and Rajapur ferry terminal area demanding immediate steps to stop the river erosion and save about 200,000 people and the properties of the area by dumping concrete blocks under the direct supervision of army men.
They declared a week-long agitation programme, including human chain, public gathering, sending memorandum to the Prime Minister for solving the problems under the direct supervision of army men within a week.Shipping minister Shajahan Khan visited the erosion affected spot of Ilisha ferry terminal and the river bank of Meghna, and Bedhuria ferry terminal of Bhola on Friday.
Current nets worth Tk 1.38 cr seized

 Members of Bangladesh Coastguard seized banned current nets measuring 691,200 metres from a Barisal-bound passenger launch on the Meghna River near Chandpur town early yesterday.
The seized nets are worth Tk1.38 crores, said coastguard sources.  Later, the nets were burnt on the river bank in presence of the district fisheries officials and local press men.Acting on a tip off, the coastguard members, led by the station commander  Lft Nuruzzaman Sheikh,  launched a  surprise raid in the launch MV  Dwipraj-iv and seized  the current nets, but they could not detain anyone. The seized nets are worth Tk1.38 crores, said coastguard sources.  
The nets were burnt yesterday morning on the river bank in presence of the district fisheries officials and local press men.
