Workers Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Fazle Hossain Badsha yesterday criticised the Sheikh Hasina government for increasing prices of gas and electricity without discussing the matter with its alliance partners.
“The government hiked gas and electricity tariffs but it did not bother to discuss the issue with its alliance partners and the matter is very unfortunate. If this is the trend, then what is the necessity of keeping the 14-party alliance? I think there is no meaning of keeping the alliance intact,” he said.
The leftist leader also called upon the coordinator of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance to hold a meeting for discussing over the issue immediately.
Badsha was addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in the capital.
At the press conference, the partner of the 14-party alliance strongly protested the government’s decision of increasing the tariffs and warned of announcing programmes against the government move if the authorities concerned do not backtrack from their announcement.
Party leaders Anisur Rahman, Nurul Hasan, Kamrul Ahsan, Mostafa Alamgir and Jahangir Alam, among others, were present at the programme.
Leaders of the party also highlighted several demands, including cancellation of the recent hike in tariffs of gas and electricity and adjusting oil prices with the international market.
