Committee formed to probe

road accidents

Roads and Highways Department on Saturday night formed a 10-member probe committee to investigate the reasons behind road accidents occurred across the country including Narsingdi, Natore and Feni before and after the Eid-ul-Azha.

The committee was formed at the directive of Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, said a ministry handout. The committee, headed by Additional Secretary of the Highways Department Shafiqul Islam, was asked to submit its report within the next 10 days, the handout also said.

2,149 cases filed for traffic rules violation in capital

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the city streets on Saturday filed 2,149 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rules violation.

It also realised over Taka 7.27 lakh as fine for traffic rules violation, said an official release of DMP yesterday.

Of the total cases, 106 were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 32 for using hydraulic horn and 32 others for using tinted glass. Besides, 557 cases were filed against motorcycles and 22 motorbikes were seized for the traffic rules violation. It also dumped 33 vehicles and wrecked 245 others.

Two ‘drug peddlers’ arrested with phensidyl syrup

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 arrested two alleged drug peddlers with 106 bottles of contraband Indian phensidyl syrup from a lichi orchard at Kalabari village under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on Saturday night.

The arrested persons are Md. Rokon, 33, son of late Tipu of Dhobra Motibazar and Md. Rafiqul Islam, 22, son of Md. Jamal Uddin of Bagbari Mobarakpur village, both under Shibganj upazila.

RAB said, acting on a tip off, an operation team of the force raided the aforesaid lichi orchard around 9 pm and held them with the bottles of phensidyl.

Doa mahfil held marking mourning day at hospital

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim on Saturday urged BNP leaders to shun conspiracy over the coming election.

 “Please do not make any conspiracy over the coming election,” he told a discussion and a doa mahfil arranged marking the National Mourning Day at 250-bed TB Hospital in capital’s Shayamoli area.

The election would be held under the Election Commission (EC) as per the Constitution, he said and urged the BNP leaders not to try to catch fish in troubled water. Deputy Director of the hospital Professor Dr Abu Rayhan presided over the programme while Central Committee of Bangladesh Awami League Health and Population Affairs Secretary Dr Rokeya Sultana, Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) President Professor Dr M Iqbal Arslan and Secretary General Dr M A Aziz were present, among others.

FF Saleh Ahamed laid to rest

AHM Saleh Ahamed, 75, freedom fighter and vice president of district BNP, was laid to rest at Barishal Muslim Gorosthan Graveyard) on Saturday. He was also given state honour.

He passed away on Friday night at Barishal Sher-e- Bangla Medical College Hospital due to old age complications.   His first Janaza was held at Amin Bari mosque near his home at Kawnia area of the city on Saturday morning.

A team of police gave state salute to the deceased after second Janaza  in front Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city on Saturday afternoon.

He left his wife, one son and a daughter and huge number of well wishers to mourn his death. Leaders of Muktijodda Sangsad Barishal, district and city units of  BNP and its front organisation, Mayor of Barishal City Corporation, different socio-political organisations were present at Janaza and  expressed their deep condolences.
